Common advice says that, as authors, we should choose a genre and be wedded to it as we would a spouse – ’til death do we part. It says that switching genres is a futile exercise that hurts sales and confuses readers. After all, readers aren’t smart enough to see the difference between a YA book and a creature feature until they’ve already bought it… right?
I disagree. Readers are made of smarter stuff. That’s why I love when a writer dips their toe in many different genre pools, or even plays around in the shallows that link similar genres together. Artists aren’t made to be static.
Today’s interviewee writes paranormal, YA, nonfiction, and children’s fiction.
Welcome, Heidi! Sell yourself to us.
Heidi Angell is a bibliophile, lexicomaniac, and wordsmith. She is the author of The Hunters Saga, The Clear Angel Chronicles, and the Hell School Series. She also created Royal Prince Vince and Creative Exercises to Inspire.
When she is not reading and writing, she can be found spending quality time with her lovely family camping, hiking, swimming, or watching movies.
What is The Hunters Saga about?
The Hunters Saga is an urban fantasy series for those who like their monsters as monsters! No kissy vampires and cuddly werewolves here! I just released the second book in the series, The Hunted, February 18th!
More about The Hunted:
For those who believe vampires should be killed, not kissed.
What would you do if your town became infested with vampires? For Chris, the answer is fight back, but his brother would rather defend than attack. Until two strangers arrive, intent on killing the vampires, and end up endangering Lucas’ crew. Fury and Havoc are deadly and efficient, but are they human? After all, what beings could scare a vampire?
What kind of research did you do for Hell School: Fresh Meat?
The Hell School Series is very much based on my experience being stalked in high school. It has been greatly fictionalized because fiction is where I feel comfortable, but all of the stalking experiences shared in Hell School: Fresh Meat played out in my real life, and I plan to keep that aspect of the story as true to real life as possible.
I felt the need to write the story because, despite stalking and harassment laws changing for the better, those laws aren’t being enforced and conviction rates are very low, except in the most heinous of experiences, and I realized that the big problem is that society’s attitude about stalking hasn’t changed. Until that changes, the laws will not be properly enacted.
I have done a lot of research on stalking statistics and the pattern of a stalker as laid out through studies by the FBI. I realized that this is far more serious and that people making light of stalking is not okay. Did you know that stalkers almost always end in violence? Not each incident, but the progression of a stalker?
I was really lucky; I managed to evade my stalker. The next girl he stalked wasn’t so lucky.
Tell us about the Clear Angel Chronicles.
The Clear Angel Chronicles is a psychic detective series where a psychic becomes a detective’s secret weapon.
You also write some children’s books. Tell us about that.
Well, Royal Prince Vince was something I actually wrote in high school, and Creative Exercises to Inspire is based on the work I did with underprivileged youth.
Kids are very important to me. I have two! I have volunteered in cub scouts, and am very active in my kid’s lives and their activities. I come from a pretty big family, so have always been around kids and enjoyed it!
Who do you write for?
Well, this is a trick question. I write for me, but I also write for my fans. I have hundreds of ideas for stories, and when I finish one project, I send out to my fans the top three ideas I would like to work on and let them vote which one they would most like to see.
[Adan’s Note: Whoa! I might steal the idea of pitching my email list before I start writing a story, because that sounds like a genius idea.]
Tell us about your writing hideout.
I am a firm believer of “Have laptop, will write!”
I write everywhere. I will pack up the laptop when going to the pool with my boys, and write while they play. Curled up in a corner booth at a restaurant is not an uncommon sight, though of late I have become quite a homebody, and enjoy rotating between my bed, the couch, the office, and when the weather is decent, the park and the yard!
What fuels your writing?
I find inspiration from everything around me. Media, overheard conversations, dreams, everywhere.
Are you working on a new book now?
I am! I have an apocalyptic infection story coming soon.
