I was recently (as of May 2014) asked to read and review the short story, “It’s in the Box”, by Jack D’Aragon, from The Other Publishing Company‘s Cracked Eye collection.
Marketed as dark comedy, I was immediately intrigued by the premise, and as soon as I caught a spare moment, soaked it up like the last gob of gravy from an empty plate. After reading it, I can say that it was worth my time, and a quick, witty read.
The narrator, Carrie, has a unique voice that can call to mind a clever goofball and a scolding nun all in the same paragraph. The story is told in a diary format from her point of view, which was a great decision on the author’s part, because it really allows you into her bizarre mindset.
D’Aragon isn’t an author I’ve read before, but if this is the quality of work he puts out, then sign me up for more. And, at $0.99, it’s worth the money to try out, even if you’re skeptical.
I give “It’s in the Box” by Jack D’Aragon four out of five stars for being clever, original, and having a great narrator voice. You can grab a copy through the link below.
