Today’s good news might not at first seem like it qualifies. It’s not a cure for what ails us. It’s not a cute, viral meme. It’s not even about someone doing kind works.
But it’s still a sign that there is more to us than what at first meets the eye, and I think that’s worth celebrating.
Good News for A Man
Late last month, Professor Stephen Hawking did something he had never done before. He released his 1966 doctoral thesis, “Properties of Expanding Universes”, for free download online.
And it broke Cambridge’s website.
“We have had a huge response to Professor Hawking’s decision to make his Ph.D. thesis publicly available to download,” a spokesperson for the university said.
What It Is
When he was 23 years old, Stephen Hawking submitted the thesis, which proposed that the universe had an actual beginning.
This is old news to the scientific community, but to science enthusiasts, students, and historians, the sharing of this document publicly is monumental.
What he thought when he got the news:
“It’s wonderful to hear how many people have already shown an interest in downloading my thesis – hopefully they won’t be disappointed now that they finally have access to it!”
Professor Hawking is one of the biggest inspirations the world has ever known years after he was supposed to have passed from this life because he has a mind – and a spirit – that won’t quit. I can guarantee we won’t be disappointed, Professor.
Good News for the World
What does this mean for the world?
It means that there are people out there who might have been casually interested in science before, but with access to the thesis of one of the most brilliant minds to ever grace the planet, it could open them up to more rigorous experimentation.
And what the world needs now is more scientists. We need more people interested in figuring out how to fix the problems we face today and predict the problems of tomorrow.
It means more kids in STEM. It means a brighter future for all of us. And for that, all I can say is thanks, Professor Hawking. We owe you (another) one.
